(Phoenix, Ariz.) – The Arizona  Sahuaros, Arizona’s premiere men’s soccer team, have advanced through the preliminary rounds of the 2006 Lamar Hunt United States Open Cup.  The Sahuaros will host the Brigham Young Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on June 14, 2006 at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.  The Sahuaros are one of only 34 teams that remain in contention for the United States most prestigious soccer tournament.

The Arizona Sahuaros:  The Sahuaros, coached by Petar Draksin (“Drak”), participate in the USASA (United States Amateur Soccer Association) and have compiled a 2006 record of 4 wins and 1 loss. The Sauharos were NPSL Champions during the 2003 season and finished second in 2004.  The Sauhuaros are the only Arizona based club that has qualified for the US Open Cup, having done so in May while competing in the Region IV Cup where they finished second.  The roster is comprised of both American and International players and has 4 veteran players who have played on the team for at least two seasons including Alex Fonseca a former professional player from Brazil.  The midfield is lead by Giber Becerra (Mexico), Daniel Sabillon (Honduras) and Thomas Kaskavage who is competing in his 4th season in a Sahuaro uniform.  Rodolfo “Fito” Collazo leads the defense anchored by GK’s Franco Carotenuto and Marvin Hypolite (Trinidad & Tobago).

The Brigham Young Cougars:  The team, coached by Chris Watkins, is participating in its fourth season in the PDL (Professional Development League) Northwest Division.  They wear blue and white, just like Brigham Young University. They have the same mascot. They play home games at the school's soccer stadium. The roster is populated exclusively with BYU students. Their head coach has an office in the athletic department.  But – and here's the important part – they're not a college soccer team, or at least not in the traditional sense.  BYU returns six starters, including three players who each saw over 1,200 minutes of action in 2005.  The team is lead by midfielder Brock Trejo and forward Steve Magleby.  Defensively, they are lead by H. VanWagenen who played in all 16 games during the 2005 campaign.

Training Sessions & Player Accessibility for Interviews:  The Sahuaros have the following training sessions scheduled prior to the match:  Friday (6/9), Monday (6/12), and Tuesday (6/13).  All sessions will be held at the Grand Canyon University Soccer Facility located at 33rd Avenue and Camelback in Phoenix from 8:00-9:00 p.m.  Please contact Ron Gilmore of the Sahuaros with any prior questions or media requests.
