Sahuaros versus MLS teamsThe first matchup had the Sahuaros playing the Kansas City Wizards at Grand Canyon University. The Wizards easily handled the Sahuaros by a score of 5-0. Here is a report of the match.
Next on deck for Petar Draksin's squad was the Chicago Fire, with the match played at the ASU soccer stadium. Contrary to pregame reports that had the Arizona club playing the Fire's second team, coach de Los Cobos sent out the first teamers and the Sahuaros gave Brian McBride, Justin Mapp, et al all they could handle. The Fire were only able to manage a single goal in their 1-0 victory and that came on a John Thorrington PK after a foul just inside the 18 yard box.
Here is the Chicago Fire's official coverage of the match. Here is the Arizona Republic's coverage of the match. On Tuesday March 2, the Sahuaros hosted the two time defending MLS Supporters' Shield winner, the Columbus Crew at Grand Canyon University. Once again, the Sahuaros played well against a team comprised of many 1st team players, including 2008 MLS Cup and league MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto and USMNT World Cup veteran Frankie Hejduk. The Sahuaros pressured the Crew early on and were holding their own yielding only a PK goal on a questionable call in first half stoppage time. Down 1-0, the gutsy local team withstood several Columbus opportunities and began once again to exert themselves only to give up a late goals by Cory Elenio and Dilly Duka to make the final score 3-0.
Sahuaros coach Petar Draksin with Guillermo Barros Schelotto Here is the The Crew's coverage of the match. Teal Bunbury, the 4th overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft and Ryan Smith, former Arsenal youth player each scored 2 goals for the KC Wizards in a rain shortened scrimmage played at the Westside Sports Complex.
