Copa Alianza

Sahuaros fall in semifinals of the 2010 Verizon Copa Alianza!

On the opening Saturday, the Sahuaros defeated Neuvo Cosas Grandes de Chihuahua 10-0. Also on Saturday, they beat Deportivo Durango of California by a 5-0 score. For it's Saturday performance, the Sahuaros were named the tournament's outstanding team for Day 1. The Sahuaros played to a draw against KAOS of Arizona on Sunday, April 18, giving them the top slot in group A.
The Sahuaros played in the round of 16 on Saturday April 24 and defeated Deportivo Union 3-0. Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the first half, and the Sahuaros exerted its influence as the match wore on.
The quarterfinals were on Sunday April 25. The Sahuaros defeated Leon 2-1, a Phoenix team that is currently in first place in the Latino Americana League. Leon is coached by Artemio Rayas, Silviano Lara and Gustavo Mujica. They also feature two former Sahuaro players, both of whom were with the Sahuaros in past championship seasons. The winning goal was a thing of beauty as Davey Lopez fed a nifty back heel pass into the path of Pat Perkins who slotted home the winner.
Unfortunately, the Sahuaros 5 game unbeaten run came to an end in the semifinal as they fell to Barcelona 2-1. The Tucson based team currently plays in two leagues, the Menlo League and the Arizona League and are near the top in both and was the winner of the last Food City Tournament.

The Sahuaros and Wizards postgame on March 7.

February and March offered a terrific time for Arizona soccer fans. Nine MLS teams and one USSF-D1 team(MLS bound Vancouver) spent time in the state for preseason training and it's expected that this is the beginning of an annual ritual for MLS clubs.
